History of Jakarta

The earliest settlements on the website of History of Jakarta were established in the mouth of the Ciliwung, possibly as early as the 5th century AD. The city’s official history, nevertheless, begins in 1527, when the sultan of Bantam conquered the Portuguese there and known as the place Jayakerta. The Dutch, under the direction of Jan Pieterszoon Coen, captured and razed the city in 1619, after which the capital of the eastern Dutch Indies, a walled township named Batavia, was established on the website.
